12/6-National Park Research Projects. We spent 3 days working on this in the library. It is only three paragraphs. Students can work in my room from 7:40-8:00 of they need to finish up.
12/8-UnitTest-Study Guide Below- Students have received a copy as well.
Weathering, Erosion, Deposition, and Soil Unit Test Study Guide
Weathering is when rocks get broken down/wears down rock
Know the things/agents that cause chemical weathering
acids, oxidation(rust), water dissolving rock with mild acid
Limestone Caves are caused by acids in water dissolving the limestone.
Know the things/agents of physical/mechanical weathering
Freezing/thawing, ice wedging, heat, plant roots, abrasion/tumbling rocks, animals scratching/burrowing, gravity causing rocks to break
Erosion is when rocks/soil/sediment is moved from one location to another by nature ( wind, water, gravity, glaciers).
Know that Mass Wasting can happen suddenly when rock/soil/sediment move downhill. ( Rock slide/Land slide)
Glaciers can cause u-shaped valleys and moraines.
Deposition happens after erosion. It is when soil/rock/sediment stops moving and accumulates. It creates many land features.
Soil is made of decomposed organic material, weathered rock, air, and water.
Humus- it is the part of soil that is dark and made of decomposed organic material.
Organic material- comes from the remains of living things( dead plants/animals/fungi- it can also be parts that came off of living things)
Decomposition- is when something is broken down into the original elements
Decomposers- are living things that break down the organic material
Soil Fertility-soil with a lot of decomposed organic material is the most fertile and has the most nutrients for plants. Farmers use organic material like manure to increase the fertility of their soil.
This was a human caused disaster. People planted crops and tilled the soil. When a drought occurred, much of the plant material died. Since the soil did not have plant roots and root systems to anchor the soil in place it began to blow away causing many different problems.
Welcome ! I’m so happy to be your 6th grade science teacher this year.
I have been a teacher for nine years at Fannin County Middle School.
I am married with two children. Connor is six and August is two. We also have a cute little dog named Laney.
I can't wait to learn all about you about you!
See you in class.
